ABC - Reading to your BabyBooks are a great way to keep babies amused anytime, anywhere.

Babies like it when you act out the story and use different voices. They will enjoy getting involved by copying your actions and singing along with you.

In their second year you can start to show them letters and sounds.

Make up extra details. Your baby will like to give characters different names and be part of the story. Use the book for actions – let it fly, jump or hide.

What kind of books?
Any kind – picture books, bath books, cloth books, board books, story books, magazines, catalogues and nursery rhymes. Go for bright colours and short texts. There are no rules – read whatever you both enjoy.

How do I share books?
Talk to your baby: tell her what the picture is; point out colours and shapes; ask questions and encourage your baby to point to the answers.

There is no right or wrong way to read out loud. Your child wants you to read in your way, the way he knows and loves. To hear different ways of reading out loud, listen to story tapes.

Don’t worry if…
• your baby only listens for a minute. Babies have a short attention span – sharing books helps.
• they don’t hold books the right way at first, they soon sort it out!
• you are not the best reader in the world. It doesn’t matter if you make mistakes – the most important thing is making it interesting and enjoyable.
